In a significant update for businesses utilising Google Business Profiles, Google has announced that websites created using Google Business Profiles will be deactivated in March 2024. This move marks a shift in Google's approach to business websites, emphasising the role of the Business Profile itself. Businesses relying on these automatically generated websites are encouraged to transition to other website platforms to maintain their online presence. The move aligns with broader changes expected as part of the Google March 2024 Core Update, which is likely to impact how businesses leverage Google's tools for digital visibility. By focusing more on optimising their Business Profile, companies can ensure they remain discoverable and competitive in local search results.

The Deactivation and Its Impact

Businesses that have created websites through Google Business Profiles should note that these websites are fundamentally basic, deriving their content from the information available on the Business Profile. Post deactivation, any attempts to visit these sites will be automatically redirected to the corresponding Business Profile. However, this redirection is temporary, only lasting until June 10, 2024. After this date, visitors will encounter a "page not found" error.

Preparing for the Change

  1. Domain Changes: Domains ending in .business.site and .negocio.site will be removed from Business Profiles in March. Business owners are advised to update their profiles to link to a new website.
  2. Business Profile Continuity: Other aspects of your Business Profile will remain unaffected. Visitors will be redirected from the defunct website to the Business Profile, where they can access business information.
  3. No Impact for Non-Users: If you don't have a website through a Google Business Profile, these changes do not pertain to you.
